FRISCO (SILVER STAR NATION) — After five seasons leading America's Team, Mike McCarthy's time as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys has come to an end, according to reports.
Tom Pelissero, NFL Insider for the NFL Network, first reported in a post on X on Monday, January 13, 2025, just after 11 a.m., that McCarthy will not return as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys for the 2025 NFL season.
According to the report from Pelissero, the Cowboys and McCarthy were unable to agree on the terms of a new contract. McCarthy's current contract is set to expire on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at midnight.
McCarthy led the Cowboys to 49 wins compared to 35 losses in his five years at the helm, which included three consecutive 12-5 seasons between 2021 and 2023, three playoff appearances, and two NFC East Championships.
McCarthy also led the Cowboys to the franchise's first road playoff victory in over 30 years in 2022. However, that victory would prove to be his only postseason win as the head coach of the Cowboys, finishing his tenure with a 1-3 playoff record.
McCarthy lost 10 games in his first season in 2020, as well as his final season in 2024. In both cases, Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott was lost for the season due to injury.
Under McCarthy's leadership, the Cowboys were consistently one of the best offensive teams in the NFL, finishing top-five in total yards and scoring between 2021 and 2023.
